Anne Roberts Young opened in September 2020 and was designed and built to facilitate a project based/hands-on learning environment with a connection to community. At Anne Roberts Young, we believe in fostering a community of critical thinkers who are innovative, collaborative, and resilient. We will strive to provide our students with rich and meaningful experiences in a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment. Students are encouraged to take risks in order to develop skills and reach their potential through the integration of science, technology, arts, and hands-on learning.
Our school’s namesake was a pioneering nurse in the Peace region. Anne, born Angharad Meirion Roberts in Brighton, England, had been nursing in a hospital outside London when she answered an appeal for a nurse from the Fellowship of the West. Anne Roberts Young was the first registered nurse in the North Peace. She arrived from England in 1930 and worked at the Grandhaven Red Cross Outpost. A year after Anne’s arrival to the Peace, she married farmer and postmaster Jim Young of Rose Prairie. They ran the Rose Prairie Post Office and Anne continued her work as a district nurse, travelling to rural homes, often by horseback and through severe weather to see patients. Through her 25-year career she delivered more than 300 children. She exhibited grit and resilience in all she did, while providing care to residents of the Peace.
We are proud to be part of a school named after such a courageous pioneer in Fort St. John’s history. The stories of Anne’s resilience and determination set a great example for us all. As a school, we will continue our focus on the “WE ROCK” acronym which celebrates what we believe and how we carry ourselves at Anne Roberts Young. At ARYES “WE ROCK” (Welcoming, Empathetic, Respectful, Open-minded, Cooperative, Kind)! We will also continue to collaborate together to work towards our school framework goals and create opportunities for our students to be engaged and have a sense of belonging at ARYES. It has been incredible watching our Framework evolve since we opened in 2020 with contributions from all stakeholders. We are confident that as we grow together, we will create a positive environment for all.
WE ROCK!
